Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with the United Nations’ highest environmental honour for his leadership of the International Solar Alliance and the pledge to eliminate single-use plastic in India by 2022.

PM Modi’s name figures along with five other environmental changemakers and organisations for “The Champions of the Earth Award”. According to a report by The Hindustan Times, the UN programme read, ” This years’ laureates are recognised for a combination of bold, innovative and tireless efforts to tackle some of the most urgent environmental issues of our times.”

PM Modi has been jointly recognised with French President Emmanuel Macron in the Policy Leadership category for their pioneering work in championing the International Solar Alliance, and for promoting new areas of levels of cooperation on action for environmental issues.
