A bag containing ₹25 lakh was found in a restaurant in Anna Nagar, Chennai. The waiter who found the bag immediately gave it to the manager and the bag was kept with the manager until the evening hours but no one turned up to claim it.
The Hindu reported that the money was found in Hotel Saravana Bhavan and a waiter Ravi, 40, found the bag and handed it over to the manager Loganathan – the bag was handed over to the police later. When the police opened the bag they found ₹2,000 denomination currency notes, totalling to ₹25 lakh. On checking the CCTV footage they found that there were two ‘well-dressed customers’ who sat on that table for breakfast that day, but they have not been identified. M. Saravanan, Inspector of Police, Anna Nagar, told The Hindu, “Immediately the money was handed over to us… and the news circulated to the media. Newspapers and television channels flashed the news. But still, no one came forward to claim the money. Hence, we remitted it to the State Treasury and duly informed the Revenue Divisional Officer, Tondiarpet, and Tahsildar, Aminijikarai.”
As per section 102 of Criminal Procedure Code, the police waited for the owners of the money to come and collect it, but since nobody turned up it was immediately given to the treasury. If the owner comes with substantial proof the money will be returned reported The Hindu.
