Justice Ranjan Gogoi has been sworn in as the 46th Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Wednesday. President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath in the presence of PM Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan among other dignitaries.

Justice Gogoi took his oath at the Rashtrapati Bhawan’s Darbar Hall. He is the first CJI from northeast India, and his term will be valid till November 2019.
After former CJI Dipak Misra, Justice Gogoi was the senior-most supreme court judge which led to his appointment. He started his journey as a Permanent Judge at Gauhati High Court in 2001 and in 2013 he joined the supreme court as a judge.
According to a report by The Indian Express, CJI Gogoi, a follower of discipline, and has garnered a reputation for being a judge who applies his mind, is proper and holds all nature of relationships in high regard.
