Falun Dafa, also known as Falun Gong, is a spiritual practice that combines the gentle meditation exercises with moral teachings based on the principles of truthfulness, compassion and tolerance. Practitioners of Falun Dafa believe that these principles are what the world needs today.

On the occasion, adherents of the practice demonstrated exercises in public parks, organised festive events and distributed flyers in cities like Mumbai, Nagpur, Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune and Bangalore, according to the press release by the Falun Dafa Association of India.

The practitioners specifically emphasised on the human rights violations happening against the adherents within China. The release also mentioned that the organisers requested public to sign petitions against this brutal persecution.

On July 20, 1999, the former leader of the Chinese communist regime, Jiang Zemin, launched a campaign of persecution against Falun Dafa. Since then, this brutal oppression has claimed many lives, seen the illegal imprisonment of countless innocent Falun Dafa practitioners and the destruction of millions of families, according to the release.

Before the persecution was launched, the Chinese regime honored the spiritual practice for improving health and reducing medical costs. The communist party’s official estimates from the 1990s show that between 70 to 100 million people practiced Falun Dafa in China at that time.

Mumbai practitioners participated in the Equal Streets festival at Bandra and demonstrated exercises and meditation on May 13, 2018.

But the Chinese Communist Party being fundamentally atheist, the former premier viewed the moral principles of Falun Dafa and the common man’s belief in the divines as a threat to the authoritarian machinery to control the country. Thereafter, the persecution was launched to eradicate the practice and it is continuing.
