Ludhiana-born Anshdeep Singh Bhatia created history last week after he became the first turbaned Sikh to be inducted into the security team of US President Donald Trump. He had to undergo rigorous training before being appointed to the force. It was no easy ride for Anshdeep as he even had to fight a court battle to get the induction cleared as the authorities insisted that he had to change his looks.
Anshdeep’s family is originally from Kanpur but shifted to Ludhiana during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. His father, Devendra Singh, who was into pharmaceutical business moved to the United States with his family in 2000. Anshdeep was 10 at that time.
The induction of Anshdeep Singh Bhatia into the elite force comes at a time when the Sikh community in the US is facing an increasing number of racially motivated attacks. His achievement is a proud moment indeed for the entire Sikh community across the globe.
