A calm music plays every morning at 6.30 a.m. under the giant canopy trees of the Cubbon Park in Bangalore, India where a woman sits meditating—the serene look on her face is truly eye-catching. Joggers pass by her; some stop to pick up a flier, while a few, completely lost in the harmonious moment, wait for her to open eyes and ask her what she’s doing. This is the story of a 59-year-old lady whose life changed for better with the peaceful meditation practice of Falun Dafa.
Chitra Devnani is a homemaker like many others but there’s more to her than what meets the eye—and she calls it “a decision to live her life with the principles of Truthfulness–Compassion–Tolerance.” Born and brought up in Pune to a Sindhi family, which had migrated from Pakistan to India during the 1947-partition, Chitra got married into another Sindhi family in Bangalore. While talking to NTD India, Chitra said life was very different, 35 years ago, when she got married.
“I gave birth to my son one year after marriage and, soon after, because of pregnancy complications suffered from severe back aches,” she said. “It went on for 15 long years and during the course of this time I also gave birth to my daughter. Life is a strange mixture of joy and pain.”
Suffering daily from the excruciating backaches, Chitra tried various alternate healing courses like sujok, acu-punture, acu-pressure, and even became a homeopathy healer—however, nothing was of help.
“In 2001, during a Sujok healing class in Bangalore, a lady from Singapore came to introduce a new practice to my group—the ancient meditation system called Falun Dafa,” she recalled.
Chitra felt an instant connection with its gentle and clam exercises, and she decided to practice it.
The intense back pain had deprived Chitra of normalcy all those years but that one ordinary day marked the new beginning for her. She shared how until that fortunate moment she had been trying hard to heal herself out of all the pain and misery, but it was only on that day when she felt “something as simple as meditation had, actually, healed her of all the sufferings.”
“I had wanted to dance for so long but it was difficult even to walk. So when I performed the rhythmic and gentle movements of Falun Dafa exercises I experienced an indescribable lightness and relief,” she said.
“I was extremely temperamental and comfort prone. I slowly started to understand that the cause of my suffering was own wrongdoings,” Chitra said. “I had this inexplicable search, a wonderment about the purpose of my life, and my search got over after I started practicing Falun Dafa.”
Today, it’s 17 long years and this beloved mom of two grown up children is still continuing with her daily Falun Dafa practice. And not only this, after going through immense health benefits, she felt “the urge to share the meditation with others.” So, Chitra has been traveling around the country to introduce the practice for free in schools, organizations, ashrams, and in book fairs.
Chitra thinks that living with a sense of purpose, however, doesn’t mean harboring contempt for everything else that seems “ordinary.”
“It’s about doing whatever you are doing with heart. Whether that’s cooking or taking care of my family,” she said. “Every Sindhi woman is required to be a good cook. Earlier I used to find it difficult to manage even the day to day things at home. Now I travel around the country to introduce the practice at schools and organizations and I manage my family responsibilities better than before.”
She said that her “improved health filled her with a profound inner joy and a remarkable sense of peace.”
“I travel from school to school to teach the exercises to the children. I feel an immense joy when they come back to me and share how they didn’t tell a lie.”
Chitra believes that “every living being is inherently good and aspires to be a good human in his life.” She shared that she will carry on with “her mission to spread the beauty and joy of being a good and kind person.”
“Values and goodness is the essence of life. Today our world needs ‘Truthfulness–Compassion–Tolerance’ much more than it was ever needed,” she said.

It was introduced to the public by Mr. Li Hongzhi in 1992 in China. It is currently practiced by over 100 million people in 114 countries. But this peaceful meditation system is being brutally persecuted in China since 1999. For more info, please visit: falundafa.org and faluninfo.net.
